If bikes are hip and taxidermy is (was?) hip, then the combination of the two must be hipper than hip. And, actually, I love the idea of Bicycle Taxidermy — mounting the handlebars of an old and much-loved bike and displaying them on the wall like a trophy.

This new form of decoration was dreamed up by British designer Regan Appleton. He explains on his website: “An eccentric side project born out of too many sleepless nights at the Royal College of Art and a homesickness for the rugged Highlands. Bicycle Taxidermy first began on a couple of memento mori for my father’s once prized but long discarded mountain and road bikes.” It costs about $80 to “mount your beast,” a service that includes an engraved plaque of stainless steel featuring an epitaph for your much-loved steed. All the cool of taxidermy; no dead animals involved.
