The Obama campaign is going on the attack today. It’s releasing a new ad, “Honor,” that strings together media quotes accusing John McCain of making false claims and running a sleazy campaign. And Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden is hitting McCain with a speech — unambiguously titled “Bush 44” — that argues the Republican candidate would perpetuate the Bush administration’s agenda on issues including energy policy.
“John McCain stands with George Bush firmly in the corner of the wealthy and well-connected,” said Biden during his speech in St. Clair Shores, Mich., according to prepared remarks. “He stands with the oil company CEOs who swore to me, under penalty of perjury, that they didn’t need tax breaks to explore for oil.”
Biden accused McCain of not only supporting those tax breaks, but planning to increase them. “John McCain is so firmly in their corner he’d hand the ExxonMobils of the world another $4 billion a year,” he said. “… There is simply no daylight — at least none I can see — between John McCain and George Bush.”
The McCain campaign today also released a new ad, “Crisis,” which focuses on the meltdown on Wall Street. The ad claims that a McCain administration would use “offshore drilling to reduce gas prices,” as one way to help fight off the nation’s financial woes.
McCain, Bush, and Republicans in Congress are all calling for more drilling off U.S. coasts and in other areas, even though most energy experts agree that drilling would do very little to reduce gas prices.
