Wynkoop Brewing Company’s Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is locally sourced, all-natural, and organic — if by “organic” you mean “made from organs,” and by “organs” you mean “testicles.” The Colorado brewery’s small-batch beer is made with local grains and hops, and flavored with 25 pounds of roasted bull gonads. Testes great, less filling!
Wynkoop originally floated the idea as an April Fool’s joke — a gag on nuts, if you will. But people were so into the idea of a beer flavored with Colorado delicacy “Rocky Mountain oysters” that the brewers were eventually won over by demand. So they made an eight-barrel batch, with 3 BPBs — balls per barrel.
Here’s the April Fool’s video, made six months before Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout became a reality. Warning: Bull testicles look kind of exactly like you’d expect, and people get pretty cozy with them here.
Obviously, you want to know what it tastes like. The brewery’s frontman Marty Jones describes the beer as an “assertive foreign-style stout,” to which we can only say “yeah, no doubt”:
It has equally deep flavors of chocolate syrup, Kahlua, and espresso, along with a palpable level of alcohol and a savory umami-like note. It finishes dry and roasted with a fast-fading hop bite.
Finishes dry, with a bite? Are you SURE this is made out of testicles?
This beer is going to go fast, so chances are you won’t be able to make your way to Wynkoop before they sell out. But guys, isn’t it at least comforting to know that you could have the ingredients for a great beer in hand right now?
