Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has taken herself out of the running for a cabinet position under Obama. She has been rumored as a top candidate for the head of Labor, Energy, Education or Agriculture.
“Given the extraordinary budget challenges facing our state and my commitment to continuing the progress we’ve made in Kansas, I believe it is important to continue my service as governor of the great state of Kansas,” she said in a statement over the weekend.
But don’t count her out of national politics. She’ll be term-limited out of the governor’s office in 2010, and may well angle for a spot in the Senate. Republican Sen. Sam Brownback (R) is planning to retire from the Senate to run for governor, and Sebelius is considered to have the best chance among Democrats at winning that seat.
