Keyla McCree, an autistic 7-year-old, pushed a panel out of the new air conditioner in her Brooklyn apartment and climbed through it, out a third-story window. But she doesn’t even have a scratch, thanks to New York bus driver Steven St. Bernard, who lives in the same apartment complex. St. Bernard managed to catch Keyla before she hit the ground. Man, sometimes your city community really comes through. (Or, I guess, sometimes people are amazing. Either moral will work here.)

St. Bernard, who has a 7-year-old (and three other kids) of his own, actually came out of the incident worse off than Keyla. He tore a tendon in his bicep making the historic catch. Hopefully the Metropolitan Transit Authority, where he’s worked for 10 years, will understand if he can’t drive for a little while, given that he made them look kind of good — St. Bernard was still wearing his MTA uniform when he made the heroic catch.
