The Low Line, an underground urban paradise on the Lower East Side, is soliciting funds through Kickstarter, which means that you can be part of the development of the city’s first underground community green space/zombie fortress.

Help Grist raise $25,000 by September 30 to further advance our climate reporting

We reported on the Low Line back in September, when the park’s planners were pitching their idea to community groups and New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). The plan is to convert an abandoned trolley terminal into a 1.5-acre green space. An innovative technology will funnel daylight from above ground, so the park’s plants can actually grow in natural sunlight (which, bonus, will let people sunbathe without fear of sunburn, or indeed suntans. It’s the perfect place for goths to climb trees!).

Now the planners are raising funds to do an economic feasibility study, and to build a full-scale mockup showing locals — and the MTA — that the technology will function and the park will be the sunny, rain-free, underground Eden it’s cracked up to be.
