The world is full of pitfalls for baby elephants that don’t sleep on a mattress on their human mom’s dining room floor. In this case, it’s a literal pitfall — the baby has fallen down a well, and conservationists have to launch a white-knuckle rescue operation.
First, they have to chase the mom away, which is sort of heartbreaking. Then they try to coax/drag the calf out on the shallowest slope of the well, which is really just a hole in the ground … but the little one wants to go in the opposite direction because she hears her mom calling. There are several minutes of really tense action, just trying to lasso a squirmy 200-pound baby and use a car to drag her out of the hole. And then a full minute of … well, but I’ll let you watch. I have to go deal with something in my eye.
