We thought it was nifty enough to use pee from public urinals to fertilize plants on-site. But Amsterdam’s got bigger plans. The city’s water utility wants to use the power of public pee to grow plants all over the city, by turning public urinals into collection points. Inhabitat writes:
The plan is to process the urine in such a way that struvite, a powdery substance, is produced. This can then be applied to fields, gardens, and green roofs to help plants grow.
The idea, actually, is to put this system in place before it’s absolutely necessary. If the planet runs low on the nutrients plants need to grow, we could be faced with the choice of recycling our peed-out nutrients through plants or having fewer crops to feed a growing population. Given that choice, we’re happy to donate our pee to the cause.
